Denise Washington
Denise Washington was a Black American West Baltimore matriarch, the wife of Marcus Levi Washington I, the mother of Marcus Levi Washington II, and the grandmother of Marcus Levi Washington III. She claimed Diana Rochelle Washington as her daughter rather than qualifying the relationship as one of marriage. After Diana’s 2010 death and Marcus II’s withdrawal into grief and alcohol use, Denise and Marcus I became their grandson’s primary caregivers within the family’s multigenerational home.
Early Life and Background
Denise was born in 1946 and lived in West Baltimore. Her childhood, education, and family of origin were not established. She and Marcus Levi Washington I had their son, Marcus II, in September 1966 and married around 1967. Marcus II grew up in the Washington family home and never moved out.
Personality
Denise was warm, socially inclusive, expressive, and loud. She readily welcomed strangers into conversation and used both speech and gesture to draw people into a group. She also attended Marcus III’s basketball games consistently and cheered for him from the stands.
After Diana’s death, Denise supported Marcus III’s daily life while continuing to check on Marcus II without shaming him for his impaired parenting. Her care was direct and practical, including food, attendance at school and athletic events, and a steady presence in the shared household.
Cultural Identity and Faith
Denise was Black American and rooted in West Baltimore. She was a devout member of Greater Bethel AME Church, where her participation included Sunday services, women’s services, youth ministry, and the food pantry.
Her family practice included a multigenerational household and chosen kinship. She treated Diana as a daughter and later welcomed Keisha Clark into the family without requiring a formal introduction or established role.
Speech and Communication Patterns
Denise spoke in a full, warm voice and accompanied her words with emphatic gestures. She talked easily with strangers, used humor to put people at ease, and became especially loud while cheering at basketball games.
Physical Characteristics
Denise was petite and full-figured, standing approximately five feet two or five feet three. She had dark-brown skin, dark-brown eyes, soft facial features, and silver hair that she kept styled. Her hands were small, warm, and frequently in motion while she spoke.

Diana died from triple-negative breast cancer in 2010. Denise continued caring for Diana’s son and supporting Diana’s widower while carrying her own grief.
Marcus Washington II and Marcus Washington III
Denise and Marcus I lived with their son and grandson in a multigenerational household. After Diana died and Marcus II became less able to parent consistently, the grandparents provided Marcus III with daily stability and became his functional parents.

Denise met Keisha Clark at Marcus III’s December 2014 scout game. Keisha unknowingly sat in the center-court seat Diana had occupied at games and arrived wearing Diana’s signature color, purple. Denise welcomed her, recognized her name from Marcus III’s passing references, and told her not to move when Keisha learned the seat’s history.
